Gap
ConceptStep 1: Identify
Definition
The measurable difference between the As-Is State and the Desired State.
The Gap is the third component of a PIPS problem statement. It quantifies the difference between where the process is now (As-Is) and where it needs to be (Desired State). The gap should be expressed in concrete terms: percentages, dollars, hours, error counts. A well-defined gap gives the team a clear target and makes it possible to measure whether the improvement succeeded.
