Silent Brainstorming
Definition
An idea generation technique where participants write ideas independently before sharing, preventing groupthink.
Silent brainstorming separates the generation phase from the sharing phase. Each participant writes their ideas privately — on sticky notes, worksheets, or digital tools — before any discussion occurs. This prevents the anchoring and conformity effects of verbal brainstorming, where early ideas disproportionately shape what others contribute. Brainwriting 6-3-5 is the most structured form of silent brainstorming.
